2025: The Year of the PC Upgrade
We’re calling it: 2025 is going to be a huge year for workstation refreshes and PC upgrades.
In 2025, a major operating system is reaching the end of support and an unprecedented amount of machines are reaching (or have already reached) the end of their serviceable life — both situations with potential security implications that could cause a very bad day. Meanwhile, a whole new generation of PC’s are hitting the market, coming in hot, and everyone wants a slice of that pie.
If there are workstation refreshes on the horizon for you or your organization, there are some things you should know when planning your purchases. Today, we’re giving you the scoop.
Why 2025?
Windows 10 Goes EOL
This year, Windows 10 reaches the end of its support cycle or ‘EOL’ (end of life). On October 14, Microsoft will officially stop pushing out updates for Windows 10 users, including critical security patches and bug fixes.
Windows 11, the successor to Windows 10, boasts improved performance, enhanced security features, and a sleek user interface. But, more punch requires more processing power. Some older PC’s simply won’t be able to handle the upgrade, driving those folks to the market for new workstations.
Pandemic-Era Hardware Ends its Lifecycle
2025 doesn’t just mark the end of an era for Windows 10, it also marks the end of life for loads of laptops and workstations purchased during the pandemic.
When the pandemic came along, it turned the workplace on its head. In some cases, temporarily, and in others, for good. This meant an extremely steep hike in laptops and other hardware, enabling teams to work from anywhere. During this time, many companies bought whatever they could get their hands on — even if it was over- or under-specc’d.
Those workstations have served their purpose, run their course, and now, it’s time to upgrade. And this time around, companies aren’t just looking for any PC that will do the job — they’ll want powerful, streamlined, workstations that save time and get the job done.
Enter: The AI PC.
Developments in AI Drive Demand of New PC’s
Word about AI driving efficiency is everywhere. Since “AI PC’s” hit the consumer market, buzz has been building, and demand is rapidly rising along with it. And, for good reason.
These new PC’s pack a punch with stronger security features, faster processors, energy efficiency upgrades, and hardware that’s purpose-built to handle the software demands of today’s workforce.
So, what does this mean for buyers?
With both a major operating system and tons of hardware reaching the end of its lifecycle, plus the skyrocketing demand for AI technology, we’re at a unique crossroads for PC upgrades.
While we forecast COVID-level stoppages and shortages in the supply chain, demand for PC’s will be staggeringly high, and delays are likely. With EOL dates nearing and windows of opportunity shortening, we highly encourage getting of the game when it comes to your PC refreshes.
TL;DR: If you’re looking to upgrade PC’s this year, we recommend getting orders placed early to avoid any drama or delays down the line.
